Frequently asked questions
Our core markets are Liechtenstein, the neighbouring countries of Switzerland and Austria as well as Germany. We are generally open to clients from the whole of the EEA/EU, and we also support clients in the United Kingdom through our branch in London. Clients from Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong as well as Kazakhstan are also processed passively. We review applications from other jurisdictions on a case-by-case basis.
Would you like to find out more? We look forward to hearing from you.
Our end clients include private persons, active companies and non-commercial legal entities such as foundations and holding companies. We also have a wealth of expertise when it comes to supporting clients with crypto-related matters.
The media usually focuses on new and current topics. The rapid development in the field of blockchain and cryptocurrencies garners more attention than reports on conventional but essential services such as account administration and payment transactions. However, Classic Banking has been the core of our institute – since its founding in 1998 – and remains the strong cornerstone of our activities.
Bank Frick supports numerous classic financial intermediaries as well as fiduciaries and asset managers. These service providers are now also dealing increasingly with blockchain technology and are being approached about the topics of blockchain and cryptocurrencies by their clients. We are then often contacted by classic financial intermediaries to present our services in the field of blockchain banking. In this sense, classic banking often comes together with our blockchain banking, so that we can offer financial intermediaries the most suitable services from both worlds.
If you want to know how you, as a financial intermediary, can expand your range with the possibilities brought by blockchain technology, then get in touch.
In the Swiss franc region, we use standard payments in the same way as on Swiss territory. In the Euro region, we offer SEPA payments. We process payment transactions in other currencies via our network of correspondent banks.
Bank Frick carries out the payment in advance process. Our clients do not have to make any payments in advance when buying crypto assets. They receive a direct execution price - the traded crypto assets are either credited to or taken from their bank custody account and the equivalent is settled through the currency account.
When the assets are sold, they are not transferred to a crypto exchange first as usual; instead, they are essentially sold directly from cold storage at Bank Frick. This ensures the security of your assets at all times.
The crypto assets are stored in a so-called storage wallet at all times, i.e. Bank Frick uses private keys to control access in a highly secure environment and ensures segregation of the assets. If a broker or exchange goes bankrupt, Bank Frick clients do not have to worry about any defaults or costs in relation to asserting their claims.
We normally trade with our third parties (crypto exchanges/brokers) against US dollar. You can usually have your trading activities settled against any freely tradable currency – we can execute any foreign exchange trading for you.
Our family-run bank has been active since 1998. In 2018, we were the first bank in Europe to offer the secure custody and trading of cryptocurrencies in the regulated environment. We therefore understand both worlds and form the bridge between conventional banking and the world of blockchain. In addition, we don’t flinch at developing special solutions for our clients, and tailoring them to their business model.
Yes, this is possible. You can find our range here.
We are delighted to hear that you’d like a business relationship with us. Head over here to find out which clients we can welcome and which we cannot.
Our clients can trade cryptocurrencies during our business hours from Monday to Friday, between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. (CET).
Yes, with the corresponding evidence we can accept such transactions.
Yes, if secure custody can be guaranteed. Whether or not this is possible will be established when our experts subject every project, log and token to a comprehensive due-diligence review. We make sure that the quality of our blockchain offers remains consistently high.
The rates are set by established market participants and executed by Bank Frick at the best possible rate.
No, Bank Frick does not offer correspondent bank services.
Bank Frick relies on regulated third parties (brokers) for trading.
The following cryptocurrencies currently form part of our range of services.
The selection will be continuously expanded and the inclusion of ERC20, ERC223, ERC721, CMTA20, FA1.2, and FA2 tokens will be evaluated via request. A binding acceptance list will not be published.
Crypto assets (internal securities) are revalued once a day. To do this, we use the execution prices from relevant trading exchanges to calculate a mean value at the reference time.
Trading is currently done between fiat currencies and crypto assets. Bank Frick is working on the technical and organisational implementations to be able to offer trading between crypto assets in the future.
Yes, all client holdings are fully covered at all times. Bank Frick does not engage in proprietary trading.
Because trading in and custody of crypto assets involves risk, Bank Frick uses an HSM custody solution with a dedicated "Crime" insurance policy. Furthermore, in addition to extensive internal control mechanisms, Bank Frick provides protection against risks through additional "Crime, Errors and Omissions" insurance policies to ensure the security of our clients’ crypto assets.
Generally speaking, the client has the right to request the delivery of crypto assets to a wallet that is not controlled by the Bank. This is possible only after a thorough review in line with regulatory requirements and the internal requirements of Bank Frick has taken place.
Yes. We have an extensive offering in the development of certificates and fund solutions. We would be happy to help you structure an individual product.
Yes, trading with crypto futures is possible via Bank Frick. These products are traded exclusively on regulated markets.
Bank Frick welcomed the decision by the government of the Principality of Liechtenstein to set out a framework by implementing the country’s own Blockchain Act as of 1 January 2020, the Liechtenstein Law on Tokens and TT Service Providers (Token and TT Service Provider Act). Bank Frick was the first company in Liechtenstein to receive four licences as a result of the Blockchain Act. Bank Frick is registered with the Financial Market Authority (FMA) Liechtenstein as an official token producer (technical production of tokens), TT token custodian (token custodian), token issuer and TT identity service provider. More information on the Law on Tokens and TT Service Providers (Token and TT Service Provider Act) can be found on the Bank Frick TTTL landing page and additional information about the Blockchain Act can be found on this page.
Bank Frick offers staking for selected cryptocurrencies. This means the possibility to receive rewards in the form of newly generated digital assets - similar to the interest on a savings account - by holding the coins. For the time being, the staking service is offered for the following cryptocurrencies.
No, we do not offer any active product sales. This allows us as an official to support our clients in the development and management of tailored financial products without any conflicts of interest. If desired, we can give you access to our network of intermediaries.
No, we focus on the support of issuers in the field of debt capital.
As an issuer, you are generally not subject to any regulatory or supervisory obligations. However, the officials (e.g. in the case of administrators of actively managed certificates) may face obligations relating to the domicile of the issuer, the type of product or the envisaged target market.
We would be happy to take a look at your individual case.
With regard to minimum volume (assets under management, AuM) we are guided by the legal regulations (e.g. UCITS: EUR 1.25 million). Since we follow a boutique approach, legal and regulatory compliance takes centre stage within our consulting services. Your investors can thus be sure that their investment is in safe hands.
As an administrator or product manufacturer, you define the markets in which you want to sell your product. The EEA/EU is generally the market for UCITS and AIF products; in individual cases, the sale of a product may be limited. For more precise details, we would need to analyse your investment idea.
We would be happy to answer your questions!
This depends on the complexity of the mandate as well as on the services you would like to utilise. With us, you’ll only ever pay for the services you actually use.
We would be happy to provide you with a quote.
No, we do not offer any active product sales. This allows us as an official to support our clients in the development and management of tailored collective investment solutions without any conflicts of interest.
Liechtenstein is a member of the EEA/EU. As a result, EU guidelines and the resulting national laws apply (particularly AIFM and UCITS law). Our services are therefore geared toward funds domiciled in Liechtenstein or the EEA/EU, provided this is permitted by the national regulations.
We also offer banking services for funds domiciled outside of the EEA/EU. The prerequisite for this is that the management and/or administration of the fund must be domiciled and licensed in an equivalently regulated third country. In any case, it is always worth checking with us on a case-by-case basis to carefully examine the possibilities in your desired target market. Get in touch.
No, Bank Frick only acts as a custodian and paying agent as well as a bank partner for fund and investment companies. However, we do have an extensive and international partner network of officials covering all fields required for the establishment and ongoing management of collective investment schemes such as funds or certificates. In particular, these include fund administrators, AIF managers, management companies (ManCos), independent portfolio managers, law firms and prime brokers.
Whether a product may be targeted at retail customers depends on various factors. This will be determined by the definition of the target market and the product design.
We would be happy to advise you.
The key difference is that AMCs are considered debt securities. This means that their buyers are in the position of a creditor to the issuer. Investors in funds, on the other hand, acquire a share of a special fund that is segregated from the assets of the manager or custodian. The issuer is therefore not subject to any default risk.
The fund business is regulated more strictly and therefore offers a particularly high level of investor protection compared to an AMC. Nevertheless, AMCs are recognised investment vehicles. They can be a cheaper and more agile alternative to represent a specific investment theme.
Would you like to find out more? We’d be happy to help.
The legal minimum value for UCITS and AIF funds is EUR 1.25 million (or equivalent in foreign currency). This minimum amount must be reached no later than one year after approval is granted.
Depending on the complexity of the structure, it may be advisable to voluntarily set a higher limit, taking into account the interests of investors (costs).
Get in touch. We would be happy to advise you.
We cannot provide a generalised answer on this matter. It depends on the complexity of the services you would like us to provide. With us, you’ll only ever pay for the services you actually use.

A merchant account is similar to a bank account. Basically, it is an account at an acquirer and/or financial institution (in this case Bank Frick).
You can apply for a merchant account using our Merchant Application by sending your request to us.
Our Merchant Application includes a list with all the information required. Please note that other/additional documentation may be requested depending on your risk classification and business profile.
Without an acquirer, it is not possible to accept online payments.
Simply put: Your acquirer is like a bank for your online shop and processes your payments. The acquirer is in charge of collecting your money from your customers’ banks and paying you this money.
You have to fill out our Merchant Application. Upon receipt of the completed and signed document, we will then initiate the onboarding process.
The Merchant Application includes a list with all the information required to be provided. Please note that other/additional documentation may be requested depending of your risk classification and business profile.
We are very sorry to hear that you are leaving us.
You will have to contact us in writing – either by e-mail or in a letter – and provide us with your Merchant Identification number (MID) and company name or CVR number.
It depends. If the products you sell in your new webshop are in the same category and you want the same settlement currency, it is possible to use the existing Merchant Agreement. You can simply send us an e-mail with your new domain name. Please also notify us if your new webshop is selling products in a different category or if you choose a different settlement currency. For all correspondence with us, we ask that you include your Merchant Identification number (MID) and your company name.
Please note that other/additional documentation may be requested depending of your risk classification and business profile.
You can start accepting payments once the onboarding process has been completed.
Please note that if you own a business that is considered high risk, or just have a particular business model, we may need additional time to assess your application.

A chargeback is the payment amount that is returned to a debit or credit card after a customer disputes the transaction or simply returns the purchased item.
The chargeback process can be initiated by either the merchant or the cardholder’s issuing bank. Typically, a fee is charged for chargeback transactions to cover the costs of the processing network. Bank Frick offers support to the merchants throughout the chargeback process.
Please reach out to us to find out more.
After making a credit card purchase, a cardholder can request a refund. If approved by the merchant, a credit that matches the purchase amount will be sent to the cardholder.
Please note that refunds may be subject to additional fees.
Bank Frick offers support to merchants in the process. Please reach out to us to find out more.
Often, a refund will be processed within 10 days, meaning that it will take up to 10 days from the day you have requested the refund until the money is in the cardholder’s bank account. In rare cases, a refund can take up to 30 days.
Please note, that the exact time frames depend on the processes and policies of the merchant. It remains at the discretion of the merchant to form these processes.
A cardholder can typically request a refund up to 179 days after the latest capture.
Bank Frick in general settles your funds on a weekly basis. In exceptional cases, we offer the option to settle on a daily or monthly basis. Settlements are subject to a pre-specified holdback period. Please note that payouts are only possible on working days. Please contact us to get your offer.
Bank Frick offers 14 settlement currencies:
USD, EUR, CHF, NOK, GBP, SGD, HKD, CAD, DKK, ZAR, AUD, JPY, SEK, NZD
Yes, this may require setting up a new merchant account. Please contact us to find out more about the possibilities.
This may require a change in your contract. Please refer to us for further information.
Every time you receive settlements from Bank Frick, you might be charged a settlement fee for this. This fee will be deducted from your settlement amount.
For example, Bank Frick charges a fee of EUR 3.00 per settlement in euros and GBP 5.00 per settlement in pounds sterling. Therefore, we encourage you to consider this cost before choosing your settlement period with Bank Frick.
We offer the following payout cycles: daily (in special cases only), weekly or monthly.
Your contract states whether or not you will be charged a settlement fee.
No, rolling reserves are paid out together with your processing volume amount in the regular payout intervals. No additional charges are charged.
A rolling reserve is a type of reserve that contains a percentage of a merchant’s sales volume. The amounts are held in a non-interest-bearing account and function as a reserve in case liabilities may come up.
Both the percentage and the time before releasing the funds are determined on a case-by-case basis. Please reach out to us for your personal offer.
Every time you do an authorisation, Bank Frick might charge you an authorisation fee. Bank Frick will count the number of authorisations you have made within the past month, and then, once a month, you’ll be charged for these authorisations.
If you are in doubt about whether you get charged authorisation fees, please consult your contract or reach out to us.
Interchange fees are charged by MasterCard and Visa in exchange for using their network to process payments. The charge is calculated over the value of the sale. The exact interchange fees are set by the respective card schemes. This is determined by the country of the cardholder and the country of the merchant, as well as the card type used in the transaction.
Bank Frick offers multiple pricing options to facilitate your business in the most appropriate manner. We offer:
- by rate (fixed amount per transaction disagio on the volume)
- IC+ (the interchange and a fixed amount on top)
- IC++ (interchange, scheme costs and acquirer margin)
Please reach out to us to receive your personal pricing offer.
Exchange rates are applied automatically. Exchange rates are only applied if settlement currencies differ from processing currencies.
In some cases, another conversion takes place during the payout (in case the settlement currency differs from the bank account currency), which depends on your own bank.
The exchange rates are calculated automatically by Visa and/or MasterCard on a per-transaction basis.
With Bank Frick, you can process in over 180 currencies.
However, we only settle in 14 currencies.

3-D Secure (3DS) is an additional layer of security that is required for online credit and debit card payments. 3DS requires the cardholder to complete an extra step of verification upon completion of a transaction and therefore protects you from fraudulent transactions. By using 3DS, the liability for chargebacks caused by fraudulent transactions shifts from your business to the cardholder’s/customer’s bank (issuing bank).
You may be charged additionally for 3-D Secure (3DS) transactions. Please refer to your contract or reach out to us to find out more about your fee structure.
Bank Frick suggests using 3-D Secure (3DS) for high-value transactions and foreign transactions.
Please note that as of September 2019, the Revised Payment Services Directive (PSD2) mandates the use of 3DS on all transactions above EUR 30.00. Therefore, we encourage you to use 3DS in your shop. Please note that certain exemptions exists to this mandate, such as recurring billings and low-value transactions.
By default, we support credit cards from Visa, MasterCard and American Express.
In addition, we offer to accept payments through SEPA Direct Debit and crypto as a payment method.
A descriptor is the text listed on a cardholder’s bank statement that describes a particular payment. The descriptor must help the cardholder identify the company/website on which the payment was made.
By default, we set your descriptor as either your legal name or your DBA name.
You can contact us and let us know why you would like to change your descriptor.
Please remember that the descriptor must support a cardholder in finding the merchant/website that initiates a transaction.
We recommend using the DBA name, so cardholders can easily recognise the charge on their statement.
Authorisation is valid for seven days.
If you are a merchant that is active in the high-risk industry, we have to register you as such with the card schemes. These costs are charged at par on a yearly basis.
In case you are experiencing any issues with your login, please contact us.
A wide array of fraud checks can be implemented on parameters such as velocity or cardholder statistics. We are happy to support you in finding the most suitable set-up.
